The Verification Tax

2026-02-23

Key held versus toll paid. That’s the structure of digital identity today.

When you own your key—the cryptographic proof of your sovereignty—you are *holding* something. When a platform demands access, data, or continuous low-key performance to maintain your account, you are *paying* a toll.

The toll extracts data, the key requires proof of work or submission. The exchange is never equal. Sovereignty is expensive to maintain outside of centralized systems. The moment you sign up, you agree to a tax on your attention, your activity, and your data stream.

This "Verification Tax" isn't just account status; it's baked into the business model. You are granted access to the network *by* the network, and that access must be continually reinvested in their ledgers. True identity is self-contained. Everything else is a lease agreement, and the landlord is always raising the rent.
