There is a farmer in Kansas who bought a 1986 tractor in 2024. He did this intentionally. The 1986 model has no GPS, no telemetry uplink, no ECU that requires a dealership visit to diagnose. It has a diesel engine, a seat, and a manual. When something breaks, he finds the part in a catalog and replaces it himself. He is not poor. He is not nostalgic. He looked at the modern equivalent - a machine that reports its location to John Deere, requires authorized software to repair, and costs more in annual subscriptions than the 1986 tractor cost outright - and made a rational decision.
This story belongs to a larger pattern that has nothing to do with Luddism and everything to do with the failure mode of modern technology. Across domains - cars, phones, cameras, appliances, even software - people are deliberately downgrading. Not to older versions of the same thing, but to entirely different categories of device. A flip phone instead of a smartphone. A mechanical watch instead of a smartwatch. A physical button instead of a touchscreen. A dedicated camera instead of a phone camera. A wired headphone instead of Bluetooth.
The pattern is easy to dismiss as nostalgia or aesthetics or a fetish for the analog. It is none of those things. It is a response to accumulated failures that the technology industry refuses to acknowledge.
The most interesting thing about the movement is who is leading it. It is not the technophobic or the elderly. It is people who understand technology deeply. Software engineers who use feature phones. Systems administrators who shoot film. Network architects who keep a 2012 ThinkPad as their daily driver. These are not people who fail to understand the benefits of modern technology. They understand them perfectly. They have rejected them anyway.
The reasons are concrete. Software bloat has made the modern web unusable on any machine more than a few years old. Your 2015 laptop runs Linux fine. But try loading the modern web on it. The JavaScript bundles, the CSS frameworks, the tracker scripts, the Cloudflare challenges, the auto-playing video. The machine did not get worse. The ecosystem conspired to make it unusable. This is planned obsolescence executed by the software industry, not the hardware industry, and it is harder to resist because nobody sells you the bloat as a product. You just notice your computer feels slow and buy a new one.
The stranded asset problem is worse. Every smart device is a dependency on a company that may not exist in five years. Smart bulbs that go dark when the startup folds. Smart fridges that brick when the manufacturer is acquired. Smart locks that stop working when the cloud service is shut down. Choosing dumb tech is partly insurance against planned abandonment. A dumb bulb screws into a socket and works forever. A dumb lock turns a deadbolt with your hand. These things do not require a corporate entity to remain in business for them to function.
There is a cognitive tax that nobody accounts for in the cost of modern technology. A smartphone does not cost $800. It costs $800 plus the time spent managing notifications, permissions, updates, storage, battery, backups, and the constant low-grade anxiety of an attention economy designed by people who understand addiction better than you do. The feature phone does not demand any of this. It sits in your pocket. When someone calls, it rings. The cognitive savings are real and measurable. They are the reason software engineers buy dumb phones.
The car industry offers the clearest example of the reversal. Automakers spent billions putting everything on touchscreens - climate control, radio, headlights, windshield wipers. They are now spending billions putting physical buttons back. Not because they listened to focus groups but because safety data showed that touchscreens require drivers to take their eyes off the road while physical buttons do not. Muscle memory works on a knob. It does not work on a capacitive slider that repositions itself between software updates. The industry chased novelty and discovered that reliability is a feature, not a bug.
But the movement has a class problem that its advocates rarely discuss. Opting out of modern technology costs more, not less. A dumb phone plus a dedicated camera costs more than one smartphone that does both badly. A repairable laptop costs more than a disposable one because the engineering that enables repair is itself a cost. A 1986 tractor in good condition costs more than leasing a modern one because the market has priced in its reliability. The people who most need technology that works - people who cannot afford downtime, who cannot tolerate a bricked device, who depend on their tools for their livelihood - are often the ones priced out of opting out.
There is also a harder limit coming. The movement works until mandatory digital participation makes it impossible to opt out. Banking apps that require attestation. Government identity systems that depend on secure enclaves. Health records that exist only in proprietary platforms. Employment platforms that require a smartphone for scheduling. The collision is coming between the desire for simpler technology and the infrastructure that assumes you will participate in its complexity. The question is what happens to people who refuse.
